ChatGPT vs Enterprise comes down to who owns the account. Regular ChatGPT (Free, Go, Plus and Pro) is a personal subscription you buy with a card, while ChatGPT Enterprise is a contract your organization signs with OpenAI's sales team, with custom pricing, extra security controls and data that belongs to the company. In between sits ChatGPT Business, the self serve plan for teams of 2 to 200 people at $25 per seat per month ($20 billed annually).
Short verdict: one person should stay on a personal plan. A small or midsize team that wants a shared workspace and no training on its data should start with Business. Only move to Enterprise when you need things Business does not offer, such as SCIM provisioning, role based access controls, data residency, custom retention or invoiced billing. The rest of this guide shows exactly where those lines fall, using OpenAI's own business pricing page and help center as of October 27, 2026.

In plain words: a personal plan is the cheapest way to get the models, Business adds a shared and private team workspace, and Enterprise adds the identity, compliance and support layer that IT and legal teams at large companies ask for.
What "Enterprise" actually means in ChatGPT
Many people searching this are really asking whether the ChatGPT they use at home is a different product from the one their employer rolls out. The models and the app are largely the same. ChatGPT in an Enterprise workspace uses the same chat window, projects, GPTs, deep research and Codex you know from Plus. What changes is the wrapper around them. For how the app relates to the models underneath, see ChatGPT vs LLM.
OpenAI describes Enterprise as a managed plan with enterprise grade privacy and security, central member management, longer context windows and admin features such as domain verification, SSO, SCIM and usage insights. Individuals cannot sign up for it. Members are invited by a workspace owner or provisioned through the company's identity system, and admins decide which models and tools each person can use.
Two practical consequences surprise people:
- Your work chats belong to your employer. In an Enterprise workspace, conversations and files are owned and managed by the organization, and admins can access an audit log of conversations through the Enterprise Compliance API.
- Joining can absorb your personal account. For Enterprise workspaces with a verified domain, OpenAI may require you to merge your personal workspace into Enterprise, or export it and deactivate it, within 7 days. A merge is permanent, and self service data export is not available inside Enterprise workspaces, so export first if you want a copy.
If you only want the strongest models for yourself, none of this helps you. Our ChatGPT Plus vs Claude Pro vs Google AI Pro guide compares the personal plans in detail, and GPT-6 Sol vs Astra vs Luna explains which model is which.
ChatGPT Business vs Enterprise: the real differences
This is the comparison most companies need, because Business already fixes the biggest worry with personal plans: OpenAI says it won't train on a Business workspace's data. ChatGPT Business is the plan that was called ChatGPT Team until OpenAI renamed it on August 29, 2025.
What both plans share
According to OpenAI's pricing table, both Business and Enterprise include a dedicated workspace, SAML SSO, an admin console, admin roles, bulk member management, domain verification, unified billing, GPT analytics and management, basic user analytics, ChatGPT Work, Codex and SOC 2 Type 2 compliance. Neither trains on your business data by default, and OpenAI can sign a Data Processing Addendum for either plan.
What only Enterprise adds
| Need | Business | Enterprise |
|---|---|---|
| SCIM user provisioning | No | Yes |
| Role based access controls and group permissions for GPTs | No | Yes |
| Enterprise Key Management | No | Yes |
| IP allowlisting | No | Yes |
| Compliance API logs platform | No | Yes |
| ISO 27001, 27017, 27018 and 27701 certification | No | Yes |
| Data residency in US, EU, UK, JP, CA, KR, SG, IN, AU and UAE | No | Yes |
| Custom data retention | Admin controlled retention | Custom retention policies |
| Dedicated onboarding, account management, custom security review | No | Yes |
| Invoicing, purchase orders, volume discounts | No (card only) | Yes |
The Business overview article is blunt about the cutoff: if you need invoice billing, purchase orders, bank transfer, net terms, Zero Data Retention or a BAA, use a contracted offering instead of self serve Business. Enterprise is that contracted offering for most companies.
Pricing and seats
Business has two seat types. Standard seats cost $25 per user per month billed monthly or $20 billed annually. Premium seats cost $125 monthly or $100 annually and give five times the usage of Standard with no five hour limit. You can mix the two and need at least two seats in total. OpenAI lists Business for teams of 2 to 200 employees.
Enterprise pricing is not published. OpenAI offers credit based and token based agreements, and since April 2, 2026 Enterprise can include Codex only seats that are billed on usage rather than a fixed monthly fee. Nonprofits can get up to 75% off Business or Enterprise through OpenAI for Nonprofits. Neither plan includes API usage: the OpenAI API is billed separately, and Enterprise workspace membership does not give you API access.
Pros and cons of each option
Personal ChatGPT
Pros:
- Cheapest way in, from free to $20 for Plus
- Start in minutes with a card and no admin
- Pro tiers give individuals the highest usage and GPT-6 Astra Pro reasoning
Cons:
- Chats can be used for training unless you turn it off yourself
- No shared workspace, central billing or admin controls
- Not designed for company data or compliance reviews
ChatGPT Business
Pros:
- No training on workspace data by default, plus SAML SSO and MFA
- Published prices, card billing and a two seat minimum
- Standard and Premium seats can be mixed to fit heavy and light users
Cons:
- No SCIM, role based access, key management or data residency
- Workspace admins can view, export and delete members' conversations, which some staff won't expect
- Capped at roughly 200 employees according to OpenAI's pricing page
ChatGPT Enterprise
Pros:
- The full security and compliance set, including ISO certifications, EKM and data residency
- Custom retention, audit logs through the Compliance API and per role model access
- Priority support, SLAs, custom legal terms and invoicing
Cons:
- No public price, so you must go through sales
- Longer procurement and setup
- Personal workspace merges can be mandatory for staff on a verified domain
Which plan should you choose?
- You work alone. Pick a personal plan. Plus at $20 a month is the usual choice. Turn off model training in Data Controls if you paste anything sensitive; our guide to using AI chatbots safely walks through the settings.
- You run a team under about 200 people with no formal compliance rules. Start with ChatGPT Business on Standard seats, and give Premium seats only to the people who hit limits.
- IT needs automatic user provisioning, role based access or audit logs. That is Enterprise territory. Business has none of these.
- Your data must stay in a specific region, or legal needs a BAA, custom terms or invoicing. Talk to OpenAI sales about Enterprise.
- You're not sure ChatGPT is the right assistant. Compare team plans first. Claude Team, Gemini in Google Workspace and Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365 are covered in our best AI chatbot for small business guide, and ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini vs Grok compares the assistants themselves.
A simple test: list the controls your security questionnaire asks for, then check them against the "only Enterprise" table above. If none appear, Business will almost certainly do.
FAQ
Is ChatGPT Enterprise better than ChatGPT Plus?
Not for an individual. Both use OpenAI's GPT-6 family, and Plus gives one person advanced reasoning models for $20 a month. Enterprise is better for organizations because it adds central control, no training on company data by default, compliance certifications and support contracts. You also can't buy Enterprise for yourself.
How much does ChatGPT Enterprise cost?
OpenAI doesn't publish Enterprise prices. You contact sales and receive a quote, with credit based or token based billing, annual terms, invoicing and volume discounts. For comparison, Business Standard seats are $25 per user per month, or $20 billed annually.
What is the difference between ChatGPT Business and Enterprise?
Business is self serve for 2 to 200 people with published prices and card billing. Enterprise is sales led and adds SCIM, role based access controls, Enterprise Key Management, IP allowlisting, the Compliance API, ISO certifications, data residency in ten regions, custom retention and 24/7 priority support.
Does ChatGPT Enterprise train on my data?
No, not by default. OpenAI says it does not use data from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu or the API Platform for training unless the organization explicitly opts in. Personal plans are different: data from services for individuals can be used unless you opt out.
Can my employer see my ChatGPT Enterprise chats?
Your organization owns the workspace, and admins can access an audit log of conversations through the Compliance API. Treat anything in a work workspace as visible to your employer, and keep personal use in a personal account.
Is ChatGPT Team the same as ChatGPT Business?
Yes. OpenAI renamed ChatGPT Team to ChatGPT Business on August 29, 2025. The rename didn't change the plan itself, though prices and seat types have changed since then.
