ChatGPT Plus vs Claude Pro is a close call at the same price of $20 a month, and Google AI Pro at $19.99 belongs in the same comparison. Choose ChatGPT Plus for the widest range of features and OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra, Claude Pro for writing, long documents and careful analysis, and Google AI Pro if you want Gemini inside Gmail and Docs plus 5 TB of storage. If you only need one, the decision is about which ecosystem you work in, not price. For what Claude Duet, Anthropic's new proactive agent, means for Pro and Max subscribers, see our Claude Duet guide.

All prices below are US list prices from each company's own pricing pages, checked on October 5, 2026; model availability was updated on October 8. Taxes and regional prices vary.

Spoken plainly: all three cost about twenty dollars a month. Claude is the only one with a built in annual discount, which brings it to seventeen dollars a month. ChatGPT Plus includes OpenAI's top model, Astra. Claude Pro includes Opus 5.5 and lets you dip into the more powerful Fable 5.1 using credits. Google AI Pro gives you Gemini 3.1 Pro, Google's best model available to subscribers today, plus a large storage bundle.

ChatGPT Plus: the most features for $20

ChatGPT Plus gets OpenAI's newest models: GPT-6 Astra is rolling out to Plus users, GPT-6.1 Sol is available in ChatGPT Work and Codex, and since October 7 the everyday Chat tab runs GPT-6 (powered by GPT-6 Sol on Plus and higher, and by GPT-6 Luna on Free and Go), per OpenAI's GPT-6 announcement. Work is OpenAI's agent mode, which can take on multistep projects using your connected apps and produce documents, slides and spreadsheets. Its usage draws on your plan allowance and varies with the size of the task, according to OpenAI's ChatGPT Work announcement.

Below Plus sits Go at $8 a month, which shows ads in the US. Above it are three Pro tiers at $100, $200 and $500 a month. The $500 tier, added on September 29, is the only one with Astra Ultrafast, per OpenAI's release notes. Pro plans also add Astra Pro, a higher effort version of the model.

Best for: people who want one assistant for writing, images, voice, research and agents. Watch out for: newer models often reach Work and Codex before the regular Chat mode, and heavy Work use can exhaust the allowance.

Claude Pro: best for writing and deep work

Claude Pro adds Claude Opus 5.5, Anthropic's recommended default model, to everything in the free plan. It also includes Claude Code, Research, Projects, Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365, and Anthropic's newer Design, Slides and Docs tools, according to Claude's pricing page. Claude Fable 5.1, Anthropic's most capable public model, is available on Pro through usage credits rather than included outright.

Above Pro, Max starts at $100 a month and comes in two sizes with five or twenty times Pro's usage, priority access at busy times and early features. On Max, Fable can use up to half of your weekly limits.

Best for: writers, analysts, researchers, lawyers and developers who work with long documents or codebases. Our Claude Fable vs Opus vs Mythos guide explains the models. Watch out for: there is no cheaper paid tier between Free and Pro, and Fable access is metered.

Google AI Pro: best value if you use Google

Gemini through Google AI Pro costs $19.99 a month and bundles 5 TB of Google One storage, Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Sheets, Deep Research, and image, video and music generation, per Google's AI plans page. Google also lists $10 a month in Google Cloud credits for developers. Eligible students can get AI Pro free for a year.

The model gap has closed. Since October 13, 2026, Google's new flagship, Gemini 4 Argon, is available to AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the Gemini app, per Google's announcement. Before that, Gemini 3.1 Pro was the best model subscribers could use, and it trailed the newest OpenAI and Anthropic models. Ultra costs $99.99 a month for five times AI Pro's usage or $199.99 for twenty times, according to Google's subscriptions page. Track the rollout in our Gemini 4 Argon release date guide.

Below Pro, AI Plus costs $4.99 a month with 400 GB of storage. From October 9, AI Plus users can use the Flash-Lite and Flash models but not Pro, and free users are limited to Flash-Lite, 9to5Google reports. AI Pro is gaining Deep Think, which was previously reserved for Ultra.

Best for: Gmail and Google Drive users, families who want storage and AI on one bill, and students. Watch out for: Argon is new in the Gemini app, so plan limits and features may keep shifting for a few weeks; AI Plus and the free tier do not include it.

What about SuperGrok and The X Subscription?

Grok is free to try, and its strength is still live search across the web and X. What changed in October 2026 is how you pay for it. Grok's maker introduced The X Subscription, one plan that bundles Grok, Grok Bot, Cursor and X Premium, and new self serve customers now choose from its tiers. US list prices on the X Subscription pricing page are Plus at $8 a month, Premium at $30 a month ($300 a year), Super at $100 and Ultra at $200; tax may be added at checkout. For what each tier includes, see Grok subscription plans.

Premium is the tier that lines up with SuperGrok. The announcement says it includes the benefits of SuperGrok, Cursor Pro and X Premium+, and its paid tiers share one usage pool across Grok and Cursor. Plus is cheaper but doesn't include Grok Bot. If you already pay for SuperGrok, nothing changes unless you choose to switch, and switching gives a prorated refund of the old plan.

Power user tiers compared

PlanPrice per month (US)Main reason to pay
ChatGPT Pro 100 / 200 / 500$100 / $200 / $500More usage, Astra Pro; Ultrafast on 500 only
Claude Max 5x / 20xFrom $100Five or twenty times Pro usage, more Fable
Google AI Ultra$99.99 or $199.99Deep Think, Gemini Agent, 20 TB storage, Argon

In words: all three companies now sell plans starting around one hundred dollars a month. These only make sense if you regularly hit the limits of the twenty dollar tier, or you need a specific feature such as Astra Ultrafast, extra Fable usage or Ultra's higher Gemini limits.

  • Buying seats for a small business (not just a solo $20 plan): see Best AI chatbot for small business.
  • You mainly need a free in app helper on WhatsApp or Instagram: see Meta AI vs ChatGPT before you buy Plus.
