Qwen Chat vs ChatGPT is mostly a question of price against polish. First, Qwen Chat has a new name

If you search for Qwen Chat and land on something called Qwen Studio, you are in the right place. Alibaba renamed the app in April 2026, and it still lives at chat.qwen.ai. The Google Play listing, published by Alibaba Cloud (Singapore), now reads Qwen Studio, and press coverage at the time (for example PANews) reported that existing chats, settings and features carried over unchanged.

What Qwen Chat is

Qwen Chat is Alibaba's consumer assistant for its Qwen model family. The official qwen.ai home page describes it as "free to use, open to all" and lists apps for the web, iOS, Android, macOS and Windows. Its feature menu covers Thinking (step by step reasoning that can pull in live web results), Search, Deep Research (an agent that runs many searches and writes a report), Web Dev (a working web page from a plain description), Artifacts, image generation and editing, and video generation. Alibaba also says it can read text, images, audio and video in one conversation.

The headline model is Qwen3.8-Max, which Alibaba released in early August 2026. Alibaba's Model Studio documentation describes it as a 2.4 trillion parameter mixture of experts flagship with a one million token context window that takes image, text and video input. The Qwen launch post calls it the most capable Qwen model to date and the first Max class Qwen model with open weights. Watch out for: Alibaba does not publish Qwen Studio's usage limits, the training opt out takes an email rather than a switch, and the service is for adults only.

What ChatGPT is

ChatGPT is OpenAI's assistant, used by more than 1.2 billion people each week according to OpenAI's October 7 GPT-6 announcement. That post introduced GPT-6 in the Chat tab with Intelligent UI, which lets answers include charts, buttons, forms and small interactive tools instead of plain text, and lets ChatGPT start answering while it keeps thinking.

Which model you get depends on your plan. Per OpenAI, GPT-6 in Chat is powered by GPT-6 Sol on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, and by GPT-6 Luna on Free and Go. OpenAI's models help article adds that GPT-6 Pro, powered by GPT-6 Astra, is in Chat on Pro $100, Pro $200, Business and Enterprise, and that Plus includes Astra inside ChatGPT Work and Codex. Best for: people who want one assistant for writing, research, files, images, voice and longer agent tasks, with the newest OpenAI models.

Watch out for: the strongest models sit behind paid plans, Free and Go can show ads, and heavy Pro model use has weekly limits even on Pro.

Pricing: free flagship vs a paid ladder

This is the biggest practical difference. Qwen does not sell a consumer plan for Qwen Studio. ChatGPT has five personal price points.

Features compared

Both cover chat, file and image understanding, web search, deep research reports and image generation. The differences are in the extras.

• Interactive answers: ChatGPT's Intelligent UI can turn an answer into a chart, a calculator or a small game. Qwen offers Artifacts and Web Dev, which build pages and code you can preview, but not answers that reshape themselves the same way.
• Agents and coding: ChatGPT bundles the Work agent and Codex into paid plans. Qwen Studio's Deep Research is its main agent feature in the app; Alibaba points developers to its API for coding tools.
• Video: Qwen lists video generation among its app features. OpenAI's Plus page lists image generation, voice and file analysis, not video.
• Long inputs: Qwen3.8-Max has a one million token window on the API. The app may apply its own caps, and Alibaba does not publish them.

Privacy, training and data location

This is where careful users should slow down.

Qwen. The Qwen privacy policy names NTH Power Global Tech Singapore Pte. Ltd. as the operator and says it collects, processes and stores personal data in Singapore, with prompts sent to Alibaba Cloud (Singapore) for inference. It says user content and feedback with identifying details removed may be used to train and improve its models, that raw input data is not used to train models directly, and that rating a reply with a like or dislike stores that conversation as feedback. Alibaba's training data summary says users can opt out of training by submitting a request; the policy lists privacy@qwen.com for privacy requests. You can delete your account from Settings, and the service is for users 18 and over.

ChatGPT. OpenAI's Data Controls article shows a switch: Settings, then Data controls, then turn off Improve the model for everyone, and new chats will not be used for training. Temporary Chat keeps a conversation out of history and training, though it may be kept for up to 30 days for safety. Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces are not used for training by default. On Free and Go, OpenAI's ads help article says ads never change answers and advertisers never see your chats, and you can turn ad personalization off.

Keep health records, ID numbers and account details out of both. Qwen's policy asks you not to upload sensitive data.

Neither chat app gives you an API key. Qwen3.8-Max is sold through Alibaba Cloud Model Studio, where the model page lists $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens in the International scope, with OpenAI compatible endpoints.
